Smart preview new compact eSUV in design sketches
Ahead of it’s scheduled premiere at the 2021 IAA Mobility in Germany this September, smart has teased us with some design sketches of its forthcoming concept of an all-electric compact SUV.
This signifies the start of a new era for the brand as it is the first car from the new joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Geely Holding, smart Automobile Co., Ltd. Whilst best known for its iconic ForTwo model, the next chapter will see the company become a pure EV, multiple-product portfolio focussed on being ultra-modern, sophisticated and advanced in connectivity solutions.
Showcasing their intent with a compact eSUV proves how serious they are by targeting young families who are looking for sustainable, electric transportation and, much like the original smart car, be of a design that is modern and a bit different to the mainstream. Based on Geely’s modular SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform will give them the perfect blend of innovative design and cutting-edge technology.
Smart is also redefining the business approach towards more direct customer engagement with a direct-to-customer sales model and transparent pricing structure.
A production model of the new eSUV should follow in 2022.
